5 Laundry Room Plumbing Tips

It’s not the most glorious of rooms – it certainly won’t be hosting a cocktail party anytime soon – but the laundry room is vitally important to just about every home. Call it the workhorse of the house, where everything goes to get clean, so keeping up the plumbing in your laundry room is a must. After all, the average family uses 41 gallons of water per load of laundry – that’s a lot of water flowing through one little room! With that in mind, our friendly Paso Robles plumbers have come up with five laundry room plumbing tips to keep you out of the dreaded laundromat.

1. Inspect and/or Replace Hoses

You may not be able to see them every day, but those hoses behind the washer are standing in the way of what could be a leaky mess. And they tend to wear over time, especially the rubber versions. So, get limber or pull out a hand mirror to do what needs to be done to get a peek at what’s going on behind that washer. Better yet, save the headache, and replace rubber with braided stainless-steel hoses for a more durable, longer-lasting solution. Don’t forget to inspect the fittings, too.

2. Check the Laundry-room Sink

Most laundry rooms have a utility sink that, well, probably gets treated as such. Everything from muddy shoes to greasy hands get washed in there, so it’s going to receive more wear and tear than the bathroom or even kitchen sink. Keep an eye on the drain, and address it as quickly as possible if it starts moving slowly. Also, make sure you check the exposed pipes underneath periodically to make sure there are no leaks or damaged fittings.

3. Organize Placement of the Appliances

Believe it or not, the way you organize your laundry room can even help you avoid plumbing issues. Pull your washing machine away from the wall a little so that the supply lines don’t kink and block or limit the flow of water. Don’t put your appliances too close together, and make sure the washing machine is on an even and stable surface. This helps your washer to function correctly and avoid leaks.

4. Use a Drain Filter

Use a drain filter to catch any particles, debris, or lint that may drain out with the washing water if your washer drains into the laundry-room sink or an exposed drain. These particles can build up and clog the drain over time. To prevent blockages, clear the filters regularly. In cases where your washing machine filter is inside the appliance, be sure to check and empty it regularly.

5. Use Cool Water When Possible

Cool water is easier on your plumbing, and it requires less energy than hot water, so opt for cold-water washes whenever possible. Speaking of efficiency, run your washer with a full load whenever possible, as well! You’ll use less water and put less strain on your machine.

We hope these laundry room plumbing tips are helpful, but if you’re having problems that you feel require a little more expertise, our professional Paso Robles plumbers are always a call or click away.
