1. Know the temperature
Get in the habit of paying attention to the thermostat on your water heater. Many manufacturers set the temperature to 140 degrees F by default, which is hotter than most families actually need. In fact, elevated temperatures may even cause scalding and accelerate corrosion and mineral buildup in your home’s pipes.
2. Test the pressure relief valve
We suggest testing the pressure relief valve on your water heater once a season or so. This is a great opportunity to both clear debris and check the pressure. When you raise and lower the test lever, the pressure relief valve should release a burst of hot water into the drainpipe. 3. Drain the tank on a consistent basis
