It’s spooky season, and that means it’s time for pumpkins, hair-raising decorations, little ghosts and goblins roaming the neighborhood, and plenty of candy. And while the time of year may call for hiding under a blanket while watching scary movies, it shouldn’t be the time for plumbing nightmares.
So, our ghost-busting Santa Maria plumbers have come up with a list of Halloween plumbing tips to make sure you and your pipes make it out of the season unscathed.
Guts – of the Pumpkin – go in the Trash
Most of us will be carving pumpkins this Halloween, but those gourd guts and seeds belong in the trash can – not the garbage disposal. The pulp from inside the pumpkin will create a nice sticky clog in your drains.
The fibrous remnants of a festive night can also wreak havoc on the garbage disposal itself, wrapping themselves around the blade or hardening over time to gunk up the works.
Dispose of Wrappers Properly
All that candy from the kids’ trick-or-treating exploits – or just because, you know, who doesn’t love Halloween candy – means wrappers lying around everywhere. Just make sure they don’t make their way into your drains.
Talk about an instant clog.
Remove Costume Makeup with Wipes
Grease-based makeup is fun while it lasts, but not only is it a pain to remove after the night’s festivities but it can do a number on your drains. Rather than washing it off with soap and water, which can lead to greasy build-up in your pipes, use a disposable wipe instead.
But remember, toss that wipe in the garbage and not the toilet.
Strange Sounds? Call the Plumbing Pros
Hearing spine-chilling bumps in the night? What about creepy gurgling or humming noises? Well, before you get on the phone with the local ghost hunter, you might try the plumbing pros first.
Bumps, gurgling or weird vibrating noises in your home could actually be your plumbing. An air bubble trapped in your lines could be the culprit, or pipes not fastened down properly. Either way, we have a guide for solutions on spooky plumbing sounds that you can read here. Likely, it’s a job for the pros.
