Is your plumbing ready for summer? If you’re not sure, here are some tips from your favorite Lompoc plumbers.
Cool It
Heading out of town? If you have a tank-style water heater, there’s no reason to heat and reheat water that’s going to be unused while you’re gone. Take a moment to turn down the temperature on your water heater. Be sure to give your water heater a quick visual inspection, too, just to make sure it doesn’t have any shenanigans planned during your absence.
Prevent Hose Mishaps
Did you know washing machine hoses should be replaced approximately every three years? A burst hose can cause a lot of damage. That is not something you want to come home to after a relaxing summer escape. Take an extra minute to inspect your hoses the next time you put a load in.
Keep Drains Moving
Summer of 2020 has lots of people vacationing at home, here in Lompoc and around the world. This means a lot more dishes to wash. Make sure everyone at your house is doing their part to keep your plumbing draining smoothly by understanding what can and can’t be flushed down toilets and washed down sinks.
Be Water Smart
We all use a bit more water in the summer. Our plants are thirstier, our outdoor activities seem to get more clothes dirty, and our kids sometimes need a little extra tub time. But we still need to be drought conscious. Make sure you’re irrigating in early mornings and evenings to reduce water loss to evaporation. If you have an automatic irrigation system, go outside and walk the whole system when it’s running, looking for leaks, popped emitters, and areas with wasteful runoff.
Stay Alert for Roots
Are your trees or parts of your landscaping looking happier than usual for no reason? Sometimes that means they’ve found a new source of water and nutrients. Unfortunately, that can mean they’ve gotten their sneaky roots into your sewer line, or there’s a break in the line. Be sure to keep your eyes open for other signs of root intrusion or sewer breaks, such as slowed or clogged drains, and call your Lompoc plumbers as soon as you suspect a problem.
