We get it, you’re hearing about New Year’s resolutions a lot right now. Do this, set that goal, make sure you don’t forget to put this or that on your to-do list… it can get exhausting. But our Santa Maria plumbers are here with some things to keep in mind in the New Year that might actually save you some headaches – and maybe a little bit of money, too. Here are our New Year’s Plumbing Resolutions to keep your drains draining and pipes flowing all the way through 2022.
Don’t Ignore Little Problems
A little leak here or a slow drain there may end up costing you in the long run – and those little bitty problems hardly ever miraculously fix themselves. So, make sure you’re heading off those big problems by tending to the little ones – tighten that faucet fixture or plunge that slow drain to prevent an expensive house call from the plumbing pros.
Keep Those Pipes Cozy
It’s getting cold out there – finally. Even though we’re in California, and while it may not exactly be as harsh as some spots in this country, it can drop below freezing around here. When that happens, you’ll want to make sure your exposed pipes – the ones along outside walls or in basements or garages – have insulating sleeves. It’s a small investment that saves you a big headache down the line.
Be More Eco-Friendly
Even though rain has arrived, Californians should still always be conservation conscious. Plus, while you conserve natural resources, you’ll save a little money at the same time. Resolve to turn off the sink when you’re brushing your teeth or shaving, install low-flow showerheads, toilets, and faucets, and think about cutting those long, hot showers a little shorter in 2022.
Treat Your Toilet Right
This year, let’s think about ways to be a little kinder to the porcelain throne – in other words, the toilet isn’t a trash can. Think about what you’re flushing; no Q-tips, cotton balls, or dental floss, and resolve to especially do away with flushing wipes (even the ones that say flushable). Toilet paper and, well, you know what else are the only things that should be going down the toilet.
Don’t Forget About Drains
Prevent the pain of frequent clogs by keeping debris out of your drains. Coffee grounds, bones, fruit pits, celery, pasta, oils, fats and greases should all go in the trash can, not the sink. Drain guards are also non-intrusive, cheap, and they can help you keep clog-causers from sliding down your drain.
Plus, a drain guard on your kitchen sink will help you start a compost pile for that organic kitchen waste. Use them in the bathroom to prevent clogs from hair, as well.
Inspect Your Water Heater
Now that winter is here, it’s a great time to make sure you won’t be caught without hot water. Check the pressure relief valve and drain your water heater at least once a year to avoid sediment buildup. We’ve put together a more comprehensive list of tips on how to make sure your water heater is in tip-top shape that you can read here.
Pay Attention to Your Water Quality
Having a dry skin problem? It might not be the weather or a lack of lotion. Your home’s water might be too hard, and you might benefit from installing a whole-home water filtration device. It’s not only good for your skin but will help prevent those pesky hard-water stains that are such a pain to clean.
