The time has come to say goodbye to 2020. That’s something most of us will cheer in itself and cautiously look ahead to the new year with optimism. So, it’s probably not a bad idea to think about some ways to make 2021 great. That’s right, resolution time.
Our Arroyo Grande plumbers have put together a list of plumbing resolutions, so your pipes, drains, and faucets aren’t forgotten about.
Reduce Water Usage
This one is a no-brainer. Conserve natural resources and save a little money at the same time. Resolve to turn off the sink when you’re brushing your teeth or shaving, install low-flow showerheads, toilets, and faucets, and think about cutting those long, hot showers a little shorter in 2021.
Be Kind to Your Toilet
The house commode is put through a lot of abuse, let’s face it. This year, think about ways to be a little kinder to the bathroom throne. Think about what you’re flushing; no Q-tips, cotton balls, or dental floss, and resolve to especially do away with flushing wipes (even the ones that say flushable). Toilet paper and, well, you know what else are the only things that should be going down the toilet.
Don’t Forget About Drains
Just like your toilet, your drains are not trash dumpsters. Prevent the pain of frequent clogs by keeping debris out of your drains. Coffee grounds, bones, fruit pits, celery, pasta, oils, fats and greases should all go in the trash can, not the sink. Better yet, start a compost pile for that organic kitchen waste. Drain screens are great for catching all those undesirables, too, and use them in the bathroom to prevent clogs from hair, as well.
Inspect Your Water Heater
The new year is a great time to make sure you won’t be caught without hot water. Check the pressure relief valve and drain your water heater at least once a year to avoid sediment buildup. We’ve put together a more comprehensive list of tips on how to make sure your water heater is in tip-top shape that you can read here.
Invest in an Inspection
Plumbing problems can – and definitely do – come as a complete surprise. Pipes can erode from the inside out, meaning even the most well-meaning homeowners can miss signs in a cursory inspection. Especially if it’s been a while since a plumbing pro took a look at your pipes, it’s probably a good time to have a complete inspection where a technician gives everything a good once over.
